Champions Baseball and Softball League

“I never realized how big a need for a league like Champions existed in our community. There are now 60 players participating across 4 teams and everyone involved has a blast. I am so glad I started this league and can see all the smiling faces.” -Alex Rejto

The Champions League is a baseball/softball league for special needs children. Founded by Alex Rejto, the league is run by two hundred volunteers and twelve coaches. The idea is that volunteer “buddies” are paired up with a special needs player in order to play ability adjusted baseball/softball games. Some of the children will hit off a set tee, while others will take slowpitch. Every game is a new challenge as the teams compete for the league title.

This year marks the second season of the league and with it has come tremendous community involvement. La Costa Youth Organization (LCYO) league President, Mr. Ed White, helped Mr. Rejto write a grant that Rancho Santa Fe Foundation funded. Combined with many business sponsors like Chick-Fil-A, Sports Authority, and Dick’s Sporting Goods the Champions League is completely free of charge for the participants and a rousing success.
